Chevron Selects Mustang as Main Automation Contractor

Mustang has been selected as a main automation contractor for Chevron’s Global Upstream business units in an agreement signed recently between Chevron USA Inc. and Mustang. Mustang will provide the front-end engineering design, detailed engineering, procurement, programming and integration for the monitoring, process control, safety and management systems at Chevron’s new and existing upstream offshore and onshore oil and gas facilities.

“Chevron will benefit from the Main Automation Contracting (MAC) strategy, namely, consistency of work product and lower cost for implementation and maintenance,” said Don Colchin, president of Mustang Automation and Control. “Mustang has the skills and experience necessary to enable Chevron to implement its automation strategy, improving integration and the operating efficiency of their facilities.”

This integrated approach will result in common interfaces across production and business systems for increased safety and efficiency, higher plant availability, lower operating expenditures and reduced engineering.

“This agreement allows Chevron and Mustang to build upon our already strong working relationship. The objectives of the Main Automation Contracting (MAC) strategy are lower design costs, better start-up, improved operability and consistent project execution. These are aligned with the goals of our upstream major capital projects and strategic business units,” said Russ Griffith, Technical Team Leader, Chevron Energy Technology Company (ETC).

Mustang recently completed multiple automation services projects for Chevron, including the Tahiti deepwater floating facility in the Gulf of Mexico, several onshore facilities for its San Joaquin Valley Business Unit, and the pre-FEED automation services for a major capital project with Tengizchevroil in Kazakhstan, in which Chevron holds 50% interest.

IceWEB Launches Cloud Storage Appliances

Virginia-based IceWEB Inc. has launched the Iplicity Cloud Storage Appliance (CSA) product line, which can be deployed either as SAN or NAS devices to deliver high-performance, scalable capabilities deployed in a centrally managed Private Storage Cloud or in a Hybrid Public/Private Cloud configuration.

Gary Dunham, Sr. VP Product Development & Engineering at IceWEB, described the offering: “Iplicity Cloud Storage Appliance is the first commercially available Cloud Storage device geared toward allowing its users, businesses of any size, to simply attach a pre-configured appliance to their network and immediately begin serving vast amounts of file and data storage space to local, remote, Internet or VPN connected users and applications. This appliance allows corporations to gain all of the benefits of Cloud Storage – positioning content closer to the originators, users and applications, control of replication and backup throughout the enterprise, centralized management of geographically dispersed data and much more – without assuming the risks of putting priceless company data in the hands of third-party providers. Iplicity CSA customers can also opt to make their content and storage resources available not only to their own users but also to authenticated partners via the internet – while still maintaining private back-links to the corporate IT infrastructure, thus ensuring both data security and consistent quality of service.”

Iplicity CSA greatly reduces the complexity of use by implementing a straightforward management Graphical User Interface (GUI) from which network support staff can easily manage the global storage appliance solution with a great deal of granularity. Once difficult tasks such as growing volumes, dragging and dropping space wherever needed (thin provisioning), reconfiguring network connectivity, creating multiple automatic replications of useable data at diverse locations, can all be performed live without impacting overall systems availability.

Iplicity CSA provides unified storage, allowing both applications and users to be granted access to their data by the widest range of protocols available (CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, FC, AOE, WEBDAV and RSYNC), affording organizations flexibility and range in how the data is accessed. The appliances also offer advanced data protection and replication capabilities, which allow organizations to drive content to different locations for different uses as dictated by their own unique needs.

Deployment is quick and easy. From un-boxing to live deployment, the pre-configured Cloud Storage Appliances can be configured on the client network and rendered ready to begin serving data in less than 20 minutes. Management and monitoring of the appliances is also quite intuitive with easy-to-understand dashboard interfaces displaying CPU utilization, network I/O and disk I/O, and the capability to “drill down” as deeply as necessary. Fully automated reporting and “e-mail home” capabilities will alert network staff to any pending, system self\-healed, or pending issues.

The 19-inch, rack-mountable Iplicity Cloud Storage Appliances are available in three pre-configured models:

  • CSA-2000 – a base level appliance with 8TB of storage and the Iplicity Management Software;
  • CSA-4000 – with 16TB expandable to 192TB; and
  • CSA-8000 – with 24TB expandable to 192TB.

Both the CSA-4000 and CSA-8000 are also available in an optional Active/Active High Availability configuration.

GE Fanuc Announces Proficy CIMPLICITY GlobalView

GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms announced the availability of Proficy® CIMPLICITY GlobalView, a highly scalable application that delivers the power of CIMPLICITY to remote clients enabling real-time monitoring, data analysis and plant floor control from within a Web browser.

“Companies need access to real-time information about their operations at all levels of the organization,” said Claire Cerrato, General Manager of GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms’ Automation Software group. “Companies are increasing their mobile workforces and require highly scalable, non-compromising products to keep them connected. CIMPLICITY GlobalView enables full viewing and control of plant operations and expands the native integration of CIMPLICITY with GE Fanuc’s other Proficy software, providing additional solution possibilities.”

GlobalView provides a full-featured HMI/SCADA client delivered over the Web so operators, engineers and managers can view, react and operate from wherever they are. This enables efficient response to situations avoiding significant downtime, lost batches or catastrophic events. It also transforms the way teams work and collaborate, because with GlobalView multiple users can connect easily to the same system to analyze the situation and make quick, fact-based decisions.  Users also don’t have to compromise functionality or re-write current applications in order to get accessibility. Ease of installation makes this a quick add-on for existing and new systems.

GlobalView extends GE Fanuc’s existing footprint in HMI/SCADA to knowledge workers not on or directly tied to the plant floor. GlobalView also introduced the Relay Server, which makes deploying HMI/SCADA on a massive scale possible. With a Relay Server deployed in the GlobalView architecture and multiple GlobalView servers underneath, customers have the ability to globalize their applications and support hundreds of simultaneous users with the only limitation being server hardware. The new software capability opens new doors to innovative, Web-only, CIMPLICITY-based applications providing the ability to connect to previous versions of CIMPLICITY without any additional development.

The product has been developed on top of CIMPLICITY, so it complies with GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms’ open and layered strategy and enables the Web user to harness the proven power of CIMPLICITY anywhere, anytime, anyplace.

“This product is a big step forward in the accessibility of real-time data to a large amount of users,” continued Cerrato. “GlobalView validates GE Fanuc’s commitment to providing innovative and scalable solutions to solve customer needs particularly in this challenging economic climate.”
